Three-week-old Warble of the
Tree Squirrel Bot Fly


During the third week after the larva cut the warble pore, the warble continues to stretch the squirrel's skin as the larva within approaches its maximum size. Two days after these photos of a 3-week-old warble were taken, the larva exited naturally and fell to the ground to pupate.

The two images immediately below are closeup views (side [left] and end-on [right]) of the same warble; the dark posterior end of the larva is protruding slightly from the warble pore.



The larvae in the adjacent two warbles in the image at left are within a day or two of exiting their gray squirrel host.
